Northwest Awards for Excellence Ceremony

Northwest’s annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony begins at 3:00 p.m. on April 7, 2025 in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom. The collaborative celebration recognizes excellence among Northwest students, faculty, and staff. In addition to the nominations being accepted for student employment, the ceremony recognizes Research Award and Tower Service Award winners.

A gift card will be awarded to undergraduate authors of the top three papers:

1st Place: $150, 2nd Place: $100, 3rd Place: $50

Awards Eligibility

  1. All applicants must be Northwest undergraduates currently enrolled when paper or project is submitted. We strongly encourage the winners' presence at the award ceremony.
  2. Eligible papers or projects must have been written during the 2024 Spring, Summer or Fall semesters. One submission per person.
  3. Ask your professor to email with verification that includes the course name and semester. 
  4. Papers or projects should be 5-30 pages max (not counting required separate references/works cited/bibliography pages) with the author's last name on each page.
  5. Papers or projects must demonstrate accurate use of one of the citing styles listed on B. D. Owens Library Citing Sources page.

Evaluation criteria

All entried will be evaluated by library staff. A successful research paper will:
  • Demonstrate extensive and thoughtful use of B.D. Owens Library sources, collections, and services.
  • Application of relevant information sources to topic
  • Utilize appropriate, relevant, and varied information sources, including but not limited to journal articles, magazines, newspapers, books, eBooks, images, videos, scores, or webpages.
  • Display an exceptional ability to identify, evaluate, locate, select, and incorporate information sources.
  • Show responsible use of information by completely, correctly, and consistently citing materials using a standard citation style.
  • Effectively organize information, and successfully communicate ideas using appropriate language and formatting (clarity, grammar, usage).

How to submit

  1. Send these attachments in the same email to LIBGA@us1788.com:
    • your research paper or project (LAST NAME.docx or LAST NAME.pdf).
    • max. 50 word abstract (summary) of your paper/project (TITLE.docx)
    • photograph of yourself (Why? If you win, the photo will be used in a powerpoint display during the awards ceremony.)
  2. Ask your professor to send an e-mail to LIBGA@us1788.com confirming you wrote the paper/project for her/his course offered during spring, summer or fall 2024. Please ask them to include the name of the course.

Last day to submit

In order to be considered, submissions must be complete and received by January 31, 2025.

Award Recipients and faculty sponsors will be honored at the Northwest Awards for Excellence Ceremony in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.

If winners cannot be present at the ceremony, they may have their professor receive the physical award on their behalf OR pick up the award with student ID at the B. D. Owens Library Services desk (1st floor).  Gift cards are sent electronically.
